Marigolds

With a fork drive Nature out,
She will ever yet return;
Hedge the flowerbed all about,
Pull or stab or cut or burn,
She will ever yet return.

Look: the constant marigold
Springs again from hidden roots.
Baffled gardener, you behold
New beginnings and new shoots
Spring again from hidden roots.
Pull or stab or cut or burn,
They will ever yet return.

Gardener, cursing at the weed,
Ere you curse it further, say:
Who but you planted the seed
In my fertile heart, one day?
Ere you curse me further, say!
New beginnings and new shoots
Spring again from hidden roots.
Pull or stab or cut or burn,
Love must ever yet return.

Water Lily

My whole life is mine, but whoever says so
will deprive me, for it is infinite.
The ripple of water, the shade of the sky
are mine; it is still the same, my life.

No desire opens me: I am full,
I never close myself with refusal-
in the rythm of my daily soul
I do not desire-I am moved;

by being moved I exert my empire,
making the dreams of night real:
into my body at the bottom of the water
I attract the beyonds of mirrors...

I spent a majority of the day working on the rest of the identification tags.  Just when I think that I've finally replaced all of them... I'll find a few that I missed!  There are hundreds of different plants in that garden.  Alex and Garrett did some weeding and general clean up.  I finished my project for the most part.  All I have left to do is put in a few more plants.

Field Trip

We visited the Arboretum today!  We did a little tour to check out some of the plants they have.  We saw a few that we would like to incorporate into the garden.  We also spoke to the workers at the arboretum about the pesky Japanese beetles.  They have completely demolished the leaves on our grapes!  The workers suggested that we just dump them into buckets of soapy water.  That is what they have been doing and it seems to be working for them.  We'll have to give it a try.

Almost Done

I'm almost done with my project.  The next step is to mulch and then put the plants in.

I finished the tiers yesterday.  Today I hauled some dirt from Dave's area to my project.  Dave is drawing up some plans for his grape trellises and Alex has been helping him with various things.  It will be nice to have the projects done so that we can get back to maintaining the garden.  It's hard to keep up with the weeds in this garden even when we aren't working on side projects!

Still Moving Mountains

Today I made quite a bit of progress rebuilding the mountain.  I didn't really have a plan in mind, but I knew I wanted a tier system.  I will be close to done with it by the end of this week, and will probably finish putting all the rocks in and adding enough dirt next week.  Moving the rocks has been the hardest part so far.  I am pretty proud!  I've been moving along fairly quickly even though I'm by myself.  Dave and Alex have been working on Dave's project this week.  Garrett managed to get the skid steer stuck when he tried moving a large boulder for Dave.  I wish I could have gotten a few shots of that!  :P

Moving Mountains

Today Dave and Alex helped me pull most of the rocks off of the herb mountain.  I managed to get it completely weeded and pull the rest of the rocks off later this afternoon.

These are the before shots.
